Passengers: Matt Covington, Jackie San Nicolas

Today is a reschedule from earlier this month and I can’t believe that the secret has been kept for over two weeks. This is a Private Flight with the purpose of Matt’s betrothal to Jackie while in the air. I call for our West Salem site as the forecast is for light winds out of the southwest. We are working on the balloon as Matt and Jackie stroll on to the field. I’m not happy with the look of the weather as all signs point to a different winds forecast than predicted last night. We get loaded up and head out over Wallace Road and into the bottom are toward the river. We drift by the ball fields between the gravel pit and are on the river for a few minutes. We still have a strong push from the west so it is up over the trees and toward North Park. I drop in over the park then I get the sign from Matt that he is ready to “pop” the question. Talk about pulling off the surprise, well done Matt! Jackie was caught off guard from the start! It is official…She said Yes, I radio to the gang on the ground. We are still drifting to the north with a bit of a push to the east and start to sneak up on Weddle and Clagget Creek Schools. I drop low to slow us down a bit and we play in this area a few minutes. The gang show up as I hang over the wet lands area. I have to climb a bit as there is a tree line on the edge of the playground and we will head toward the Indian school for a possible landing shot. As we drift to the north I get more speed and will miss the school for the landing. It is out into the farm country and we pick up more speed once in the open. Landing zones are at a premium out here so I will need a little help form Mother Nature to park today. I drop low and slow down a bit and spot a nursery with some open space. I move the crew into position and Jan has been talking with the owner and we are “go” for a landing. We have room to lay down and get the balloon in the bag. We hit the road and thank our host for the use of the property. It is back to West Salem and time to picnic.
I get the story started, the toast is done and the certificates are presented.

Jackie: “Skimming off the tops of trees, hands grip the sides, down on one knee, he fumbles for the ring, and with our hearts in the sky, I said YES! A BEAUTIFUL MEMORY!”
Matt: “WOW! She said YES! Wahoo! I’m so HAPPY!”

A BIG thank you to today’s Crew (I can’t get in the air or back on the ground without’um)
Jan, JR, Cecil
