Passengers: Gary Bennett, Phaedra White & “Sal” (the gold guy)

Today we have a “tag along” member of the Travel Salem (SCVA) staff “Sal”. He doesn’t say much but he is a lot of fun and I think enjoyed the morning activities. Gary is the (relatively new) owner of Duffy’s Hanger in Salem. A great spot for the BEST BBQ in Salem, cold beer, smooth drinks, friendly folks and live music too.

I call for our Brooks launch site as the forecast is for a cool morning with an upper breeze averaging about 5 MPH. We meet all at the private airport and are greeted with calm winds and a warming sunrise. We get the gear unloaded with the help of “Sal” and start to get Starship pumped up and ready to stand. I call for Gary and Phaedra to climb on in and then Jan says, don’t forget “Sal” so we have him come along too. I put the heat in, we are off the pad about seven and take the drift I expected to the south. As I gain so altitude we shift more to the west than I want so I go looking for a correction. I find the turn I want to the east at about a thousand feet and we will hold here for a bit. It is faster up here so we get into Keizer as I drop down for a look at the golf course. It looks like we have more geese on the course today than “duffers”. The breeze down low has slowed a bunch and I think that this will be a good day for a “splash & Desch” in the lake at Inland Shores. I call for the gang to get set up for some photos as I drop in over the condos and settle in for the shot. Once we clear the old pump island I drop lower for the water shot. We get a perfect “practice water landing” in and then cross over the restaurant toward the church and the first LZ.. There has been a shift on the surface to the east so I miss the church parking lot and will us the back lot at the Renaissance Inn today. The gang move into the lot as we slowly drift to them and once I skip over the tree we have a line down to them. We get the balloon moved to the far end of the lot as there is a conference starting in about 30 minutes and we don’t want to be in the way. We get the balloon bagged, the “sit” is done and with the help of “Sal” we get loaded and head back to the airport for the picnic.
I get the story started, the toast is done and the certificates are presented.

It is time to say goodbye to “Sal” but I think that Jan is going to be lonely when he’s gone.

PASSENGER COMMENTS:
Gary & Phaedra: “This was an absolutely beautiful day and a magnificent flight. My (Phaedra) fear of heights is gone. Thank you so much for an awesome time.”

A BIG thank you to today’s Crew (I can’t get in the air or back on the ground without’um)
Cecil, “Sal”, Jan, Tim
