Passengers: The Howard’s – Paul, Antje, Holden & Max

We are in the “lull” before the storm and I call for the West Salem site for launch but after we meet at 5:30 the pilot balloon tells us we will move to Keizer for the launch this morning. The gang gets to work on the balloon and the Howard’s want to get some hands on so we glove them up and have them join in. We get the pump up started with Antje at the throat and our “new guy” Todd on the other end. Our other “newbie” is Todd’s wife Karen (sorry for the butt shot) as she is handling the “pull out” chores. The pump up is getting completed and we will load the passengers next. With the briefing done I add more heat and we are off the park and heading to the south at a gentle pace. We drift out over Keizer for the first half of the flight moving at speeds from 3-8 MPH depending on the altitude I pick. We are heading toward the Oregon Deaf School which will be Holden’s new school this fall as he is going to attend a Charter School housed on the schools property in a surplus building. On the way we pass the new construction of the Capitol Auto group new home on the edge of the pond off the Parkway. I drop down low so the kids can get a close look at their new school this fall. Max thinks that “low” is really cool too. I climb back up to flight altitude as we head into “business” section of town. Paul works at the Salem Hospital and he is going to get a close look from the air today as we are drifting toward that area. I spot the LZ (landing zone) for this morning, it will be one of two either Willamette U’s football field or Bush Park next door. As I set up for the sot I get a bit of a push to the east so I get a shot at the Rose Garden. I don’t want to damage the gardens so I drop a line to the “gang” for a tow out to the grassy area across the road. We get the balloon deflated out then tucked up for the pack. We get the passengers to do the “sit” then load up for the trip back for the picnic.
I get the story started, the toast is done and the certificates are presented.

Paul: “What an awesome flight! This has been a VERY memorable way to celebrate my 50th Birthday! Thanks for a safe and enjoyable ride.”
Antje: “A beautiful morning to fly over downtown Salem. A smooth and flowery landing in the Bush Rose Garden. A great crew and awesome pilot! Great fun and a very memorable event!”

A BIG thank you to today’s Crew (I can’t get in the air or back on the ground without’um)
