Passengers: Scott & Angela Dye

Today we have a rescheduled flight that was a surprise by Scott for his wife. He did his very best to keep the “gift” (a flight) with us a secret then Mother Nature stepped in and blew us out. Sunday was the day for the first try but today is going to work. I call for a Keizer site but when we get there the surface winds have shifted to the WSW instead of the forecast NNW. The pilot balloon tells me to move to West Salem for the best track for today. When we get there a second pi-ball confirms that this site will work just fine today. We get the balloon out of the bag and stretched out under a bright sunrise. I call for the passengers to board and we are off the lot about 6:30. We have the drift to the east as did the pi-ball and head out toward the river after playing a bit over one of the many ponds in the area. We cross over the tree line on the river and I drop down for a possible dip in the water. When I drop for the shot I catch a push from the south and this will put us over the condos before we can get wet. The “gang” is on the ground getting some photos as we drift on toward Front Street. We head out toward Broadway and the Alliance Church complex, which happens to be Angela & Scotts church. I spot a possible LZ downwind and have the gang move on down toward it. This is Grant Park we use a few times a season and it also is home to the North High’s baseball team. I drop in for the shot and on the way down I get a “slip” breeze that pushes us off the LZ. I will cross over State Street and have the gang move into a new parking lot at the Nazarene Church that was a open field 2 years ago when I was here last. It is summer bible camp time and we have a lot of little “lookie loos” watching the BIG balloon land in the lot. The balloon gets tied up and put in the bag as we load up and head back to Wallace Park for the picnic.
I get the story started, the toast is done and the certificates are presented.

Angela: “What a wonderful experience! My husband surprised me with a hot air balloon ride for our 25th Wedding Anniversary. We lifted off at a West Salem church and at the Nazarene church in east Salem. I think we had a big smile the entire time!”

A BIG thank you to today’s Crew (I can’t get in the air or back on the ground without’um)
