Passengers: Gayle & Dennis Pomroy, Cecil Parker(crew p/out)

Today the winds have returned to a NNE push so I call for the Keizer site for the launch. The winds are calm at the park and the sunrise is still very red with all the smoke still in the air from all the wild fires in the hills. We get the balloon out and filled with cold air then it is time for the passengers to climb on in with Cecil getting the crew p/out ride today. We lift off the park with a slight push to the east for a bit then it swings around to the south. It is the 10th Anniversary of the 9-11 attack so there is a celebration going on at the Keizer Fire station as we drift by we get the music off the bagpipe band. We drift down River Road as the gang is under us when I get a sharp push to the west and it looks like a river crossing again. As we cross over a bunch of pontoon boats we are in West Salem. We drift up the hill off Orchard Heights Road as I’m looking for a spot to park and a church is the first choice. As I set up the shot I get a little upslope lift off the church into a small valley and the wind stops. We are over a little clearing behind a street filled with duplexes so this will be the LZ this morning. I drop us lower and send down a line for the tow from the gang to the street around a couple of units. While we are packing up the gear our “rescue” team arrives. It seems that some “busy body” saw the balloon between two trees as we were working our way down to the street and called 911 to report a “balloon stuck in a tree”. Well after all it is 9-11 and what da heck? Why not make a call?? Even if you have NO IDEA of what you are reporting is true or not! The “gang” gets the gear packed, we have the “sit” done and leave this lovely little neighborhood.
I get the story started, the toast is done and the certificates are presented.

Dennis: “Super memory! Especially enjoyed the Police and Firemen who rushed to our rescue.”
Gayle: “Whoopee, that was some trip! I’m glad Jim didn’t get arrested.”

A BIG thank you to today’s Crew (I can’t get in the air or back on the ground without’um)
